    9th Grade Entrance Placement Exam

Once accepted to Shawsheen, incoming freshmen take an open response style placement exam which assesses their number sense, pre-algebra, and algebra knowledge and skills. The composite score from this exam is used to place these students into a 9th-grade course as seen in the table below. *

*Remedial courses for students who are required to receive specialized instruction based on the Individualized Education Plan are described in the Support Services Program section.

    Graduation Requirement

Three years of mathematics course work are required by the school for graduation.  However, seniors who have not passed the Mathematics MCAS test are required to enroll in the fourth year of mathematics to achieve an MCAS competency determination—which is a state-mandated graduation requirement.   Students who plan to apply for admission to a four-year college or university are strongly encouraged to complete four years of mathematics instruction.

**Honors Probability and Statistics is a dual-enrollment course that allows students to earn college level credit through Middlesex Community College. Students must qualify for this course based on Middlesex college requirements.
